- During the month of March...
Reading and Language Arts:
Reading
Reading instruction in literature will focus on the rereading of texts and finding evidence from the text for answers, finding central messages in texts, and comparing and contrasting characters in different genres.
Informational reading instruction will focus on close reading (rereading a passage for different purposes, focusing on digging into text evidence), asking the 5 W's and H about a text (who, what, where, when, why, how), and comparing and contrasting two informational texts on the same topic.
Phonics
Students will learn the following phonics patterns: long a (ai and ay), long o (oa and oe), ie, er, ur, ar, and or (r-controlled vowels), and finally, ow and ou, soft and hard g and c, and word families such as ind, and ild.
Language
Students will learn more about plural nouns, focusing on irregular plurals, matching nouns to verbs in sentences, using commas in dates and to separate words in a series, and using determiners (articles and demonstratives- a, an, the, this, that, these, and those) in writing.
Writing
Students will practice opinion writing and provide closure for their writing. Students will peer edit by responding to questions and suggestions from peers. Students will also add details to strengthen writing, follow agreed upon rules for discussions; they will build on others’ talk in conversations and ask questions to clear up any confusion.
Math
We will begin Unit 5 which deals with story problems, number combinations to make a sum (5+5=10, 4+6=10, 3+7=10…), and problem solving with change unknown (4+______ =10). In this unit, students would benefit from practicing their addition facts at home to help them with the demands of this unit (ipad app, flashcards, computer website, etc).
Don’t forget to check https://www.upraised.org/ for math help sheets, lessons to practice, and how you can help at home. The access code is ‘ocee’.
Social Studies, Science, Health:
Students will learn about George Washington Carver, Dental Health, and the basic needs and characteristics of the different classes of animals (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, reptiles, and insects).
